Moving Words – Magnetic Attraction

Timothy Brady

“A good leader has a compass in their head and a magnet in their heart.” – Howard G. Hendricks

What if you could take your moving company to the next level of success by actions which naturally go together, like they were magnetically attracted?

Think about it. If you put two magnets on the table turned so the correct poles face each other, they go together with an audible ‘click.’ If their opposite poles are facing, though, you can’t make them fit together, even with a sledge hammer.

So what would be some of those naturally magnetic actions?

What was your plan when you first started your moving company? If you said something like “cheaper than anybody,” your magnets just went off opposite ends of the table. Instead, think quality service doing what other movers either refuse to do or can’t do. What do your customers and shippers in your own area need most? Figure this out and …. hear that click? Those magnets quickly went together, smoothly and firmly. You just set your company apart. That’s going to mean more work, and more revenue, and profits for you as you fill those needs. This in turn means you can hire more drivers who have the best service skills – and corner the market for that niche in the moving industry.

Notice that nowhere is there a mention of lower rates to beat the competition. Providing superior service and charging rates which provide a good return for your carrier = click.

Along that same line, having a business plan that includes your numbers can attract money to grow on. I know a small carrier owner who lived in a rural area, where the biggest bank was accustomed to loaning money to farmers: to get their land prepared, then crops planted, perhaps to purchase the necessary equipment to operate the farm efficiently. But the bank hadn’t ever loaned money to a carrier to buy a new trailer or expand by adding another truck and driver. When he went into the bank with figures just like he was a farmer, showing what he could earn with that new trailer and how fast he’d pay off the loan – the bank said “Yes.” That was twenty-some years ago. Small carriers with sensible business plans in his area can still go to that bank and get a loan to expand on – click.

A motor carrier grows when you invest in it. But this doesn’t mean just trucks and trailers. If you hire an expert to do something you don’t have the time to do – like an Enrolled Agent to do your taxes – that means you don’t have to spend hours sweating over tax forms and receipts. You can spend those hours prospecting for more moves, which is a far better use of your time. And, didn’t you just hear those magnets click into place again?

Your successful moving company will also automatically attract more shipping clients, as word of your carefully-crafted individual customer service spreads. How automatically? You got it – like two magnets coming together with that famous click.

Sometimes success and profits are not only irresistible – they’re unavoidable. Click!

Goals are like a magnet – they pull. And the stronger they are, the more purposeful they are, the bigger they are, the more unique they are, the stronger they pull. – Jim Rohn
