Moving Words – Happy Holidays

“Love the giver more than the gift.” – Brigham Young

Wow! The holiday season is upon us once again. The season of giving and celebration of life is on the minds of everyone. Movers and van operators are juggling their schedules and loads to land everyone at home for the holidays. We’re all trying to make sure we’ve got every gift we need for the ones we love.

As moving company owners, we know Christmas and the holidays can be tough times for drivers: tonnage is light; dispatch, shippers and customers want what little loads they have covered, and they never seem to have the one that gets a driver home. The traffic is the worst, as folks are trying to complete last minute shopping, their nerves frayed and attention directed elsewhere. The weather and road conditions change in a breath of cold air, making what would have been a short trek into a slipping and sliding fifteen-mile-per-hour nightmare. The pangs of despair creep into van operators’ thoughts as they wonder if they’ll really make it home for the holidays.

But all in all, movers and van operators persevere; we know ultimately getting everyone home safe and sound is our goal. Whether some of us make it home the day before Christmas, Christmas Day, or the day after, we’ll enjoy being there with the people we love.

So here’s my holiday list for all my moving and trucking industry friends who keep America rolling, and who are responsible for every gift arriving and placed under a tree or exchanged between families and friends. Without your sacrifices and dedication to get the load there, this season wouldn’t be what it is for the rest of us.

A Holiday Wish List for Truckers:

• May your road be clear of traffic.
• May your highways be free from road construction.
• May the weather be fair on your way home.
• May your dispatcher know the road to a good load that will take you to your loved ones.
• May you receive a full bar cell phone signal for a complete phone conversation to your family and friends.
• May you always have a full Thermos® of great coffee that stays hot for the trip home.
• May you be graced with the time to shop for that perfect gift for the folks at home.
• May you pull up to home and jump from the cab to folks running from the house saying, “You made it home for the holidays—Hoorah!”
• May you be with the ones you love on Christmas Day.
• And to all, may your holiday be bright no matter what your celebration, with peace on earth and good will to all of mankind.

Good roads and good loads everyone, and Happy Holidays!!!!

“The joy of brightening other lives, bearing each others’ burdens, easing others’ loads and supplanting empty hearts and lives with generous gifts becomes for us the magic of the holidays.” – W. C. Jones
