Moving Words – Magnetic Attraction

Timothy Brady

“Conscience is our magnetic compass; reason our chart.” – Joseph Cook

What if you could take your moving and storage company to the next level of success by actions which naturally go together, like they were magnetically attracted?

Think about it. If you put two magnets on the table turned so the correct poles face each other, they go together with an audible ‘click.’ If their opposite poles are facing, though, you can’t make them fit together, ven with a sledgehammer.

What would be some of those naturally magnetic actions?\

What’s the current focus of your hauling revenue? If you said something like “COD coast-to-coast and cheaper than anybody,” your magnets just went off opposite ends of the table. Instead, think local – are the majority of COD customers moving from your area or where are they moving to? What about locally based or owned companies? Are they growing and expanding on site, or moving personnel and operations to other locations? In other words, look to what’s needed by the people whose kids go to school with your kids/grandkids. Or what about those local civic organizations in which you participate, or the churches you and your personnel attend? Check out the communities where you and your staff are already known.

Hear that click? Those magnets just went together, smoothly and firmly, by filling the moving and storage needs and requirements of those folks in your community.

That same magnetic attraction is required when looking to hire the best people. In our current inflationary low-unemployment environment, having the pay and benefits at the top of the industry’s pay scale is what’s needed to have the best talent in the moving business. From my 40+ years in the moving business, when unemployment is low it’s always difficult to attract the best talent. So become innovative and aggressive with your benefits and pay packages. Then you can have the cream of the talent crop instead of what’s at the bottom of the barrel.

Along that same line, having an updated, well-thought-out business plan can literally attract money to grow on.

Notice that nowhere is there a mention of lower rates to beat the competition. Providing superior service and charging rates which provide a good return for your company is imperative to sustain and grow, especially during an inflationary period – click.

Your moving company grows when you invest in it. But this doesn’t mean just trucks and trailers. Your investment in the right systems and technology, along with people who are experts in operating those systems, is what will make your company click.

Sometimes success and profits are not only irresistible – they’re unavoidable when everything comes together – click!
